A BUN test determines the amount of urea nitrogen in blood and ensures if kidneys are working well. The urea nitrogen is a waste product produced by our body during the breakdown of protein in food. This protein forms in the liver and then travels through our blood to our kidneys. In a healthy individual, the urea nitrogen is then filtered by the kidneys and excreted through urine.
Women and children show lesser BUN value due to the typical protein metabolism found in them compared to male population. It is normal to have a small amount of urea nitrogen in the blood, typically ranging from 5 to 20 mg/dL or 1.2 to 7.1 mmol/L. Please note that the normal range mentioned above varies with the reference range of the lab, so make sure to interpret the values with the help of your physician. A higher amount of urea nitrogen in blood rebuts the plausibility of early kidney disease due to a high protein diet, internal bleeding, outcome of corticoid therapy, or some other reason that should be investigated further.
The normal BUN levels vary with age and sex.
