What is a Thyroid Test?

A health test that assesses the health of the thyroid gland and examines the levels of thyroid hormones such as Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine(T3), and thyroxine(T4). It helps in the diagnosis of thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, which are also called overactive thyroid gland and underactive thyroid gland, respectively.

Overnight fasting is required for this test and should also be accompanied with enough hydration and any over-the-counter medicines should be avoided. You can also consult a doctor if you need help in preparing for the test. Apart from that, you can show your results to a doctor and get help with the medication and other treatment process required to balance your thyroid.

What does the Thyroid Test measure?

There are three main hormones in the blood that are measured in the Thyroid Test; TSH, T4 & T3.

  • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) Ultrasensitive – Pituitary gland produces the TSH hormone and it helps in stimulating and regulating the thyroid gland. The production of thyroid hormones T3 & T4 is regulated by the thyroid gland with the help of TSH. These hormones are necessary for body’s metabolism, heart rate, and temperature. According to the high or low levels of T3 and T4, the TSH hormone is released by the pituitary gland. As a result, more T3 & T4 are released by TSH and vice-versa.
  • T3 or Triiodothyronine Total – T3 in the blood is a thyroid hormone that is released by the thyroid gland and helps in managing the metabolism, heart rate, energy levels, and temperature of the body. It is found in the body in two forms; free and bound. The free T3 is not attached to any proteins, whereas bound T3 is attached to proteins such as THBG, transthyretin, and albumin.
  • T4 or Thyroxine Total – T4 hormone is also present in the blood, both inbound and free form. Though, majority of the T4 is present in the bound form. It is also produced by the thyroid gland and its balance along with TSH and T3 must be maintained for the normal functioning of the body.
